Models: Markov, physics, ecosystem
Three families of models, borrowed from probability and statistical physics, applied to the rhythm and text of the drops, then to the American conspiracy scene in which Q was born. Each is tested against a null model, and negative results are reported as such.
Markov chains
Hidden regimes of activity
A hidden Markov model splits the days into 3 regimes, each with its own mean rate and variability. The most active regime ("Activity", 9.9 drops a day on average) covers only 26% of days but holds 97% of drops, and lasts 7.0 days on average before switching. The most likely path has 107 switches, and 3 of the 5 volume breaks found by another method (Statistics page) fall within a week of a switch of the model.
Drops per day, coloured by estimated regime
Most likely path (Viterbi algorithm). The same figures are given in the table below the chart.
| Regime | drops / day | variance / mean | mean stay (days) | share of days | share of drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silence | 0.00 | 1.0 | 162.2 | 43% | 0% |
| Low activity | 0.42 | 5.6 | 7.8 | 30% | 3% |
| Activity | 9.94 | 6.8 | 7.0 | 26% | 97% |
Method
Hidden Markov model with negative binomial emissions (daily counts are too dispersed for a Poisson law, with which the BIC kept asking for more regimes), estimated with the Baum-Welch algorithm. The number of regimes is chosen by the BIC (5,798 for K = 1, 4,744 for K = 2, 4,641 for K = 3, 4,668 for K = 4, 4,719 for K = 5). (Rabiner, 1989)
How topics follow one another
Each of the 4,063 drops with text gets its dominant topic (the 12 topics of the Discourse page). In the 846 multi-drop sessions (2,481 transitions), the next drop stays on the same topic 38.6% of the time, against 36.4% when the order of drops is shuffled within each session (p = 0.001, 1,000 permutations). The effect is real but modest, since knowing a drop's topic reduces the uncertainty about the next from 2.55 to 2.38 bits. The most over-represented transitions are listed below.
| Topic of the drop | Topic of the next | occurrences | expected (chance) | ratio to expected |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| news · fake · fake news · unlocks | coincidence · post · amazing · msm | 20 | 10.2 | 1.96 |
| confirmed · trip · hunting · happy | god · bless · god bless · thank | 11 | 6.5 | 1.70 |
| coincidences · believe coincidences · believe · think | news · fake · fake news · unlocks | 10 | 6.0 | 1.66 |
| coincidence · post · amazing · msm | coincidence · post · amazing · msm | 13 | 8.2 | 1.59 |
| test · sec test · device · sec | test · sec test · device · sec | 15 | 10.5 | 1.43 |
| confirmed · trip · hunting · happy | confirmed · trip · hunting · happy | 10 | 7.0 | 1.42 |
| people · stupid · people stupid · sick | god · bless · god bless · thank | 20 | 16.0 | 1.25 |
| people · stupid · people stupid · sick | people · stupid · people stupid · sick | 31 | 24.9 | 1.25 |
Method
Transition matrix between consecutive topics within a session (less than 30 minutes apart). The expected value is the mean of 1,000 permutations of the order of drops within each session, which preserves session composition. Only transitions seen at least 10 times are listed. A catch-all topic gathers many short drops, which limits the resolution of the analysis.
Style drift and resemblances
A statistical model of character sequences, trained on one semester of drops, predicts the next semester more or less well, and the excess surprise measures drift. Two jumps dominate, from 2017-S2 to 2018-S1 (+0.56 bit per character) and from 2019-S2 to 2020-S1 (+0.47). Elsewhere the style is stable from one semester to the next. The first jump matches the move from 4chan to 8chan, the second the return on 8kun after 8chan was shut down (August-November 2019). Part of the drift reflects changes of subject, which the measure does not separate from style.
Surprise from one semester to another (bits per character)
Rows are training semesters and columns tested semesters. The darker the cell, the more the tested semester surprises the model.
| From | To | surprise (bits/char) | baseline (bits/char) | drift |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2017-S2 | 2018-S1 | 3.35 | 2.78 | 0.56 |
| 2018-S1 | 2018-S2 | 2.96 | 2.73 | 0.23 |
| 2018-S2 | 2019-S1 | 2.79 | 2.78 | 0.01 |
| 2019-S1 | 2019-S2 | 2.88 | 2.84 | 0.04 |
| 2019-S2 | 2020-S1 | 2.85 | 2.38 | 0.47 |
| 2020-S1 | 2020-S2 | 3.08 | 3.20 | -0.12 |
Compression gives a second measure, because a text is encoded more efficiently after a similar one. Q's 2017-S2 semester stands apart (its nearest neighbour, Q 2018-S1, is at 0.46). No semester of Q comes close to Trump's tweets, which form a homogeneous block (smallest distance between Trump semesters: 0.07).
Method
Smoothed order-3 character Markov model, trained on 80% of a semester's drops and tested on 20,000 held-out characters of each semester. Compression distance (lzma) is computed on 30,000-character samples, with three draws. It complements the stylometry of the Discourse page. (Benedetto et al., 2002) See also the page Discourse.
Physical analogies
Earthquakes and aftershocks: does one drop trigger others?
In seismology, each earthquake can trigger aftershocks whose rate decays according to Omori's law. Applied to the drops, the same model attributes 80% of drops to an earlier drop rather than to the "background" (the rate specific to each of the 6 volume regimes, modulated by time of day). With a constant background, which leaves slow changes in activity to the model, the share rises to 85%, which is an upper bound. Half of the aftershocks follow their trigger within 17 minutes, and their rate decays like an Omori law with exponent 2.62. The Omori model fits the data far better than no excitation (Kolmogorov-Smirnov gap of 0.044 against 0.49). Q posts in bursts, one drop calling for others.
Model fit: rescaled times against the exponential law
An adequate model follows the diagonal. Without excitation, intervals are far too dispersed.
| Background | Excitation | AIC | triggered drops | KS gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| one level per regime | Omori kernel | 9,577 | 80% | 0.044 |
| one level per regime | exponential kernel | 9,756 | 75% | 0.045 |
| one level per regime | no excitation | 21,329 | — | 0.494 |
| constant level | Omori kernel | 9,818 | 85% | 0.047 |
| constant level | exponential kernel | 10,110 | 78% | 0.046 |
| constant level | no excitation | 23,499 | — | 0.530 |
Do Trump's tweets trigger drops? Added to the model, this cross-excitation explains 0.5% of drops, within 2.3 hours on average after a tweet. That is more than with tweets shifted by 1 to 14 days (p = 0.035, 28 shifts), but the effect is marginal and confirms in another form the absence of systematic "deltas" (Trump page).
Method
Hawkes process estimated with the EM algorithm, kernels normalised over 30 days. The fit is checked with the time-rescaling theorem. Volume regimes are those of the Statistics page, and the hourly profile is taken from session starts. (Hawkes, 1971; Ogata, 1988; Veen & Schoenberg, 2008) See also the page Q and Trump.
Long memory of activity
Detrended fluctuation analysis measures how variability grows with the time scale. For Q the exponent is H = 0.81 by day (0.71 by hour), against 0.49 once days are shuffled, so an active period announces another active period, over weeks. Trump's tweets have a memory of the same order (H = 0.84), which makes it a property of human online activity, not a signature of Q.
Fluctuation by time scale (days, log scales)
A slope of 0.5 means no memory, a steeper slope long memory.
Method
First-order DFA on daily and hourly counts of the main period (October 2017 - December 2020), with a shuffled-days control. (Peng et al., 1994)
Avalanches: "critical" sessions?
Systems at the edge of instability produce avalanches of all sizes, following a power law. Q's sessions do not. A power law fits only the 117 largest of the 1,743 sessions (from 8 drops), with an exponent of 4.0, far from critical values (around 1.5), and it can be told apart neither from an exponential (p = 0.44) nor from a lognormal (p = 0.66). Trump's tweet bursts look the same (exponent 4.2). The result is negative, since nothing points to critical dynamics.
Session sizes (complementary distribution, log scales)
Share of sessions with at least x items. A power law would be a straight line.
Method
Maximum-likelihood fit with threshold chosen by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance, goodness of fit from 100 synthetic samples, comparison with alternative laws by Vuong's test. A session groups drops less than 30 minutes apart. (Clauset et al., 2009; Vuong, 1989)
Q's clock: a phase break
Posting times can be read as angles on a 24-hour dial. Q posts mostly around 17:57 (New York time), Trump around 13:22. Month by month the two clocks stay linked (phase locking 0.75, Q about 5.0 hours after Trump). But Q's clock shifts. The best split, on Apr 21, 2018, separates a period when Q posted around 20:48 from one when it posts around 17:12 (p = 0.005, permutations). A change of hour is not proof of a change of author, but it adds to the style breaks noted above and on the Discourse page.
Monthly peak hour (New York)
Circular mean of each month's posting times (at least 20 drops). The dotted line marks Q's phase break.
Method
Circular statistics (resultant length, Rayleigh test). The break is searched over every split between days leaving at least 150 drops on each side, maximising the gain in resultant length, and p comes from 200 permutations of the order of drops. See also the page Discourse.
Q in the American conspiracy scene
Q was not born alone. It appeared on /pol/ (4chan), in an ecosystem already rich in conspiracy theories. This part sets the drops against the activity of the conspiracy scene, from Reddit forums (r/conspiracy, r/greatawakening, r/CBTS_Stream, r/The_Donald, r/QAnonCasualties, r/conspiracytheories), Wikipedia page views, Google searches and, eventually, /pol/ itself. The guiding question is whether Q leads the scene or follows it.
The Reddit sample covers 8,946 days out of 8,946 (100%).
Syncretism: does Q pick up the scene's themes?
Of 112 themes of the conspiracy scene (moon landing, 9/11, chemtrails, Pizzagate, Epstein, vaccines, "stolen" election...), 66 never appear in the drops and 35 fewer than 10 times. Q almost never names conspiracies. It carries them through people (Epstein, Soros, Rothschild, the Clinton Foundation). For themes present often enough, the table compares, week by week, their share of drops with public attention.
The number of distinct themes raised per quarter peaks in Q4 2017 (20 themes) and in Q2 2020 (21 themes).
Scene themes raised per quarter
Number of distinct lexicon themes cited at least once in the quarter's drops.

Method
Weekly series (share of drops citing the theme; estimated mentions in r/conspiracy, views of the Wikipedia article or Google interest) are prewhitened with a second-order autoregressive model, then cross-correlated from -8 to +8 weeks. The significance of the maximum comes from 300 IAAFT surrogates, followed by a Benjamini-Hochberg correction across all tests. A positive lag means Q raises the theme before the public. Themes cited in fewer than 10 drops are not tested. (Schreiber & Schmitz, 2000; Benjamini & Hochberg, 1995)
Who informs whom?
Transfer entropy measures how much a series' past helps predict another, beyond what that other's own past predicts. Across 11 daily series and 106 possible links, 0 remain significant once the shared weekly rhythm is removed and multiple tests are corrected. The table gives the ten strongest links.

Method
Daily changes of the logarithm, with the weekly rhythm removed (mean by day of week), are discretised into terciles. We take the maximum over lags of 1 to 7 days and test it against IAAFT surrogates of the source (200, then 1,000 more for promising links), with a Benjamini-Hochberg correction. Without removing the weekly rhythm, every pair of series "informed" each other at 7 days. Window: October 2017 - December 2020. (Schreiber, 2000; Schreiber & Schmitz, 2000; Benjamini & Hochberg, 1995) See also the page News.
Hourly response of the Q forums
r/CBTS_Stream: around 118 starts of Q sessions, activity in the following six hours exceeds by 0.10 (relative to the previous day) that of randomly drawn times (p = 0.008), and the peak comes 23 h after the drop.
Activity of r/CBTS_Stream around the start of a Q session
Ratio to the mean of the previous 24 hours. The grey band covers 95% of random times drawn with the same hourly profile.
r/greatawakening: around 395 starts of Q sessions, activity in the following six hours exceeds by 0.07 (relative to the previous day) that of randomly drawn times (p = 0.012), and the peak comes 20 h after the drop.
Activity of r/greatawakening around the start of a Q session
Ratio to the mean of the previous 24 hours. The grey band covers 95% of random times drawn with the same hourly profile.
Method
Superposed epoch analysis on hourly comment counts (Arctic Shift), 500 draws of random times. A session groups drops less than 30 minutes apart.
Attention peaks: outside shocks or internal surges?
An outside shock (a news event) raises attention at once and lets it fall quickly, while an internal surge builds gradually and decays slowly. For the largest peaks of each series, the table gives the share of the rise that precedes the peak, the decay exponent and Q's activity in the week before.

Method
Peaks are chosen by their ratio to the 61-day moving median, at least 90 days apart. The prior rise is the mean activity over the previous 14 days above the background, relative to the peak, and the decay is the exponent of a power law over the following 45 days. An outside shock has a prior rise below 10% and an exponent above 0.5, an internal surge a prior rise of at least 20%. (Crane & Sornette, 2008)

Method
Monthly mentions estimated over all subreddits, with a Bass model fitted by least squares from the month of the first drop. The first occurrence in the sample is a bound, because the sample reads only part of each day's messages. (Bass, 1969)
Google search waves (United States)
Each row shows when the American public searched for a term, relative to its own maximum. The 2020 waves (adrenochrome, #SaveOurChildren, Plandemic, the election) stand out clearly from older, declining interests (Illuminati, chemtrails).

Shape of each query requested alone (two weekly windows stitched together, plus a monthly window) and level measured against a stable anchor ("conspiracy theory"). Google Trends is a sampled, rounded index, so small volumes are imprecise. "—": level not measurable against the anchor.

Q on /pol/, its cradle
Q was born on /pol/, 4chan's "politically incorrect" board. The Papasavva et al. dataset holds 134,529,233 of its posts in 3,397,911 threads, from June 2016 to November 2019, so before, during and after Q's time there. It was read once, in full. It contains 3,293 Q threads ("Calm Before the Storm", "Q research", threads containing a drop), totalling 405,183 posts. Only counts and rates are published here.
A brief niche
In Nov 2017, 6.9% of /pol/ posts are written in Q threads. The next month, Q leaves for 8chan and the share falls to 0.20%. From 2018 on it settles around 0.12% (monthly median). Q remains a /pol/ topic, but is no longer its centre.

Birth of the formulas
55 Q-related formulas are frequent enough on /pol/ to be dated. 16 were already rising before Q's birth on 28 October 2017. 4 appear with Q without Q using them, as ways of talking about Q. 8 are used on /pol/ before Q uses them, and 16 are used by Q first. For 11, no clear onset emerges. "CBTS" ("Calm Before The Storm") takes off as early as the week of Oct 2, 2017. That is when Donald Trump told reporters "maybe it's the calm before the storm" (5 October 2017). Q settled into threads that were already open.

Method
The onset is the first week in which the number of posts using the formula exceeds the 0.999 quantile of a Poisson distribution, at the pre-Q rate (July 2016 – 22 October 2017) scaled to the week's volume. The exceedance must recur at least twice in the following four weeks. The very first occurrence is not used because it is often accidental ("I got a Q anons", a Star Trek reference). First use by Q is the first drop containing the formula, on any platform. Q's own posts are counted (233 posts out of 134.5 million).
Does /pol/ respond to Q?
Q's /pol/ period (28 Oct 2017 to Jan 4, 2018, date of its last drop on /pol/): around 111 starts of Q sessions, mentions of Q on /pol/ in the following six hours exceed by 0.54 (relative to the previous day) those at randomly drawn times (p = 0.002).
Mentions of Q on /pol/ around a Q session — Q's /pol/ period (28 Oct 2017 to Jan 4, 2018, date of its last drop on /pol/)
Ratio to the mean of the previous 24 hours. The grey band covers 95% of random times drawn with the same hourly profile.
After Q's move to 8chan (2018-2019): around 1,059 starts of Q sessions, mentions of Q on /pol/ in the following six hours exceed by 0.16 (relative to the previous day) those at randomly drawn times (p = 0.002). The peak comes 1 h after the session starts.
Mentions of Q on /pol/ around a Q session — After Q's move to 8chan (2018-2019)
Ratio to the mean of the previous 24 hours. The grey band covers 95% of random times drawn with the same hourly profile.
Method
Superposed epoch analysis of hourly mentions of Q (QAnon, "Q said"…, drops, CBTS), 500 draws of random times that follow the same hourly profile. A session groups drops less than 30 minutes apart. After November 2017 the drops are posted on 8chan, so a response on /pol/ signals relaying from one board to the other.
Toxicity
Over the whole period, Q-related posts have a mean toxicity score of 0.366, against 0.406 for all of /pol/. Highly toxic posts (score above 0.8) make up 14.7% of them, against 19.3%. Yet day by day they are more toxic than the rest of /pol/ on 58% of the 1,184 days compared (median gap 0.005, Wilcoxon p < 0.001). This apparent paradox comes from the make-up of the subcorpus, which the breakdown by group below clarifies.

Toxicity by group
Q threads (391,258 scored posts) are markedly calmer than /pol/, with 0.317 on average against 0.406, and less toxic than the board on 73% of the 313 days compared. They are calmest at Q's birth, when the drops were being decoded there (0.291 from late October to December 2017), but remain calmer afterwards (0.384 in 2018-2019, against 0.407 for all of /pol/). Conversely, isolated posts citing a promoter (196,091 posts, 76% of which cite Alex Jones or InfoWars) are more toxic than /pol/ on 67% of the 866 days (median gap +0.018, Wilcoxon p < 0.001), and more obscene on 95% of days. Isolated posts using Q vocabulary outside Q threads (150,513) are barely above the board (median gap +0.009, 58% of days). The overall mean is pulled down by the weight of Q threads, above all in November 2017, while ordinary days are dominated by isolated posts, especially those citing promoters.
| Group | scored posts | mean toxicity | share > 0.8 | median daily gap | days with group > /pol/ (days compared) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| all of /pol/ | 131,243,567 | 0.406 | 19.3% | — | — |

| isolated posts using Q vocabulary | 150,513 | 0.412 | 15.7% | +0.009 | 58% (683) |
| isolated posts citing a promoter | 196,091 | 0.423 | 16.2% | +0.018 | 67% (866) |
| isolated posts citing a pseudo-insider (FBIanon, HLIanon…) | 31,258 | 0.398 | 13.2% | -0.035 | 29% (41) |
Method
Perspective scores are those of the dataset. "Q-related posts" covers Q threads and, outside them, posts using a formula from the Q core, late Q mythology, pre-Q insiders or promoters. The daily gap is the mean of Q-related posts minus the mean of all /pol/, on days with at least 100 scored Q-related posts, tested with a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. In the groups, each post is counted once. Every post in a Q thread counts with Q threads, even if it cites Alex Jones. Outside them, a post signed with a Q tripcode counts with Q vocabulary, and a post using both a Q formula and a promoter's name falls into one of the two groups according to the first term matched (a rare case). Perspective handles irony and 4chan slang poorly, so these are orders of magnitude, not fine measurements.
What is talked about: Q, its threads, its milieu
Hate codes (mostly antisemitic: ZOG, (((echo))), "Kalergi"…) appear in 5.0% of /pol/ posts before Q and 6.5% after, against 3.6% in Q threads and 0.1% in the drops. Q keeps its cradle's conspiracies (classic conspiracies appear in 2.3% of the drops, against 0.9% of /pol/ posts), but not its explicit hate vocabulary.

Method
Share of posts (or drops) using at least one formula of the family, with the lexicon approved before the scan and ambiguous formulas excluded. /pol/: 1% sample (posts whose number is divisible by 100), before or after 28 October 2017. For Q threads, all their posts are used. In brackets, the number of texts. Hate codes are published only as aggregates.
The vocabulary of Q threads
Compared with the rest of /pol/ after October 2017, the 30 most over-represented words in Q threads are: “bread”, “cbts”, “larp”, “qanon”, “storm”, “indictments”, “podesta”, “posts”, “cia”, “keystone”, “baker”, “tripcode”, “questions”, “rabbit”, “threads”, “crumbs”, “alice”, “qmap”, “archive”, “hrc”, “wonderland”, “potus”, “huma”, “itpb”, “qbhqo”, “spreadsheet”, “sealed”, “saudi”, “shills”, “rothschild”. It is the lexicon of a decoding workshop ("bread", "baker", "crumbs", "archive", "qmap", "tripcode"), of its targets (Podesta, Huma, HRC), of its riddles ("Alice & Wonderland", "white rabbit") and of a constant suspicion of imposture ("larp", "shills").
The flags displayed by 4chan confirm the American character of the phenomenon. 73% of Q-thread posts carrying a country flag come from the United States, against 58% across /pol/ over the same period.
Method
Log-odds ratio with an informative Dirichlet prior (Monroe, Colaresi and Quinn), z-score, with the word counts of all /pol/ since October 2017 as prior and reference. Words of at least three letters, appearing at least 100 times and in at least 20 Q threads (which rules out copy-paste floods). Web-address fragments, month abbreviations and any word matching a sensitive lexicon pattern are removed. (Monroe et al., 2008)
